Hallmark University Student Team Takes Second Place at the “Top Gun” Aero Skills Tournament

Local University Aeronautics Team Captures Prestigious Awards in Top Gun Competition.  On January 14, 2017, aeronautics professional and student teams from the Southwest region competed at the “Top Gun” Aero Skills Tournament in Dallas, Texas. San Antonio’s Hallmark University student team (Ross Burger, John Orchard, and Alexander Michel) took second place in the junior (student) division while Hallmark faculty, Robert Olivares, took second place in the senior (professional) division.
For the Top Gun event, competitors (individual and teams) are scored on the quality and accuracy of their work while racing against time, each other, and in front of an audience. Notably, Olivares was the lone faculty member competing against a senior field of active aviation professionals providing a great example of the skill and industry currency of Hallmark faculty.
“This was an awesome event and a great opportunity for our junior technicians to interact with senior technicians,” said Olivares, the sponsor faculty from Hallmark. “Our students all said that they look forward to future events.”

The event was developed by Aircraft Technologies Group. In remarks to all organizations in attendance regarding the overall purpose of the event, Jay Logie (president of the group) stated that “our common goal is education, to inspire the younger generation into the world of aviation, to attain industry support, to increase awareness of an urgently needed workforce, and to increase awareness of growing career opportunities in the field of aerospace.”
