High School Students Learn Skills and Earn Scholarship Opportunities at Hallmark Summer Intensives

On June 23rd, parents and high school students from the San Antonio area gathered at Hallmark University’s main campus for the summer intensive Joint Awards Ceremony. During the ceremony, led by Hallmark University Provost Donald Gregson, students who completed their summer intensives received certifications and scholarship opportunities before a congratulatory audience of instructors and family members. Students wishing to enroll in Hallmark University earned $3,000 in scholarship money towards an associate’s degree and $6,000 in scholarship money towards a bachelor’s degree.

Only hours before the ceremony, students from the business summer intensive were giving presentations to local business leaders in a “shark tank” forum. Prior to their presentations, the business students spent a week learning the fundamentals of business and applying that knowledge in groups as they conceptualized and designed a professional business plan. Students completing the healthcare intensive spent a week being trained to safely approach and assess an emergency medical situation, administer CPR, and perform various medical procedures related to stitching, phlebotomy, and patient triage. Students in the cybersecurity intensive spent two weeks learning the necessities of network protection while preparing for the CompTIA Security+ certification examination.

A week earlier, students from the Aviation summer intensive spent five days at Hallmark University’s College of Aeronautics inside an active hangar located at the San Antonio International Airport. Aviation intensive students were able to taxi an aircraft, go inside San Antonio International Airport’s Air Traffic Control Tower, and acquire the fundamental knowledge of aircraft functionality and maintenance. In addition to acquiring marketable skills and knowledge, students were able to spend time immersed in the industries that interest them most. For many, like Banks Wooten, the intensives helped lessen the uncertainty surrounding educational and professional pursuits after High School. “This helped me to better understand what I want to do,” said Wooten, a student of the Aviation summer intensive.

Hallmark University Summer Intensives are provided annually and are free of charge to participating students due to sponsorships provided by Frost Bank, IP Secure, SwRI, CommuniCare Health Centers, Redbird Flight Simulations Inc., Aeria Luxury Interiors, Innové, and the San Antonio International Airport. The last of the 2017 summer intensives begin on July 31st and will be limited to the study of cybersecurity.
